With lives hanging in the balance and all hope lost, a most unexpected hero rises up, proving that the power of optimism really can save the world! THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL, based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg, features irresistible characters and magical music, and is sure to make a splash with audiences young and old. The future is bright, the future is bold, the future is THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL!

Auditions are open to performers age 5 to adult.
NOTE: The creative team is open to casting actors in more than one role. Also, gender-blind casting and casting of young performers in roles typically played by adults (and vice versa) are possible. Casting will celebrate diversity in body type, color, race, gender, age. That’s what an ocean habitat looks like, that’s how our world is, and that’s the Bikini Bottom Way.

CHARACTERS
SpongeBob SquarePants (pop tenor) He is optimistic, innocent, boyish, energetic, and sometimes hyperactive.
Patrick Star (tenor) Well-intentioned but lacking common sense or skills; kind and somewhat clueless. An innocent; a big softie, who can also be prone to sudden childlike fits of rage or frustration
.
Sandy Cheeks (mezzo-soprano or alto) A brainy and athletic Texan squirrel who came to Bikini Bottom for a research project. She acts as SpongeBob's most trusted ally on their quest to stop the volcano from erupting, using her vast amount of scientific knowledge and brilliant inventions to aid the mission.

Squidward Q. Tentacles (tenor with a G# belt, tap dancing skills a plus) Grumpy, cynical, dry, short-tempered, generally negative but lovable.
Sheldon J. Plankton (tenor, rap skills a plus) His personality outweighs his size -- slick, scheming, nefarious. Has the ability to charm. Determined, he will do anything to get ahead in life. Very greedy.  NOTE: This character was originally played by an adult male with a Plankton puppet. The director is open to casting a young child as the onstage Plankton, with dialogue and vocals provided from offstage by an older performer. (In this event, the offstage performer might also be cast in another, onstage role.)
Karen the Computer (soprano or mezzo-soprano) Glamorous, a robotic housewife of Plankton. She has been there for Plankton's every scheme and plot and has become jaded -- she's been there and done that. Strong comic role.
Eugene H. Krabs (baritone)
The greedy owner of the Krusty Krab, and employer of SpongeBob and Squidward. While everyone is off panicking about Bikini Bottom's imminent doom, he decides to strike while the iron is hot and puts on a huge "apocalypse sale" at his restaurant, exploiting the fear of his fellow fish to make himself even richer.
Pearl Krabs (mezzo-soprano) Mr. Krabs' bratty teenage daughter. Character role with gospel vocal overtones.
Patchy the Pirate (baritone) A metatheatrical character who represents the show's "number-one fan." His role involves several key appearances and a musical number.
The Mayor of Bikini Bottom (soprano, mezzo-soprano or alto) Evolves from reassuring leader to authoritarian ruler as the volcano threatens Bikini Bottom.
Perch Perkins (bass) Bikini Bottom's news anchor who reports on the impending volcanic disaster, delivering exposition with a distinct news-style delivery. Known for his "live" reports from the scene, urging donations for an escape pod and keeping the audience updated on the escalating crisis.
Larry the Lobster (tenor, baritone or bass) A body builder, obsessed with his looks and building muscle. He is ALWAYS working out.
Mrs. Puff (soprano, mezzo-soprano or alto) The town driving instructor. She is sassy, sarcastic, and bitter. The glass is always half-empty.

Old Man Jenkins (tenor, baritone or bass) The oldest Boomer in all of Bikini Bottom.
Fish Female Vocal Trio (various ranges) This singing-and-dancing trio will provide backup harmonies on numbers throughout the show.

Gary (role for a small child) SpongeBob's pet snail.
The Electric Skates (various ranges) A famous boy band in Bikini Bottom.
French Narrator (voiceover) Unseen character who provides narration for portions of the show.

Foley Artist Fish (non-singing) This is a staged role that produces all sound effects specified in the script and score live -- and within view of the audience -- to accompany the stage action.
Sardines, Sponges, Sea Anemones, Various Fish, Pirates (assorted vocal ranges)
Everyone must prepare up to 16 bars of a song that best showcases their voice (quality, range, etc.).
Karaoke CDs are acceptable. (No lead vocals allowed on CD.)
No a cappella vocal auditions.
Everyone will be vocalized.
(An audition track that can be used is provided below. It is not required for anyone to audition with this selection. It is only provided as an option and to provide the "flavor" of the show.)
